Very often people are not able to understand why sad
history is repeated in their family from generation to generation. I have a cousin
whose father died when she was still very young and when her family needed him
most. When she got married, her husband died on the day before her daughter was
to go for study to carve out a career as an air hostess. It stopped her from
going for that study. Since then she never had the opportunity to pursue her
study and fulfill her dream to become an air hostess. She is now a teacher in a
small primary school in a village! It is difficult to describe how sad she is.

To begin with, very often this happens because there is
some sin in the family for which a person or people involved in it have not
repented and sought forgiveness from God. Of course, Jesus has atoned for the
sins of the mankind by shedding His blood on the cross. The blood of Jesus
cleanses us from our sins – both the sins that we have committed in past and
the sins that we shall commit in future. However, every time we commit sin, we
need to remember the price that Jesus had to pay on the cross because of our
sins. If we remember that, we are bound to hate our sins and our sinfulness. It
is this attitude toward sin, and the help from the Holy Spirit of God, that
will eventually lead us to live a pure life.
Christ’s suffering, therefore, should inevitably lead
us to repent for our sins and try not to commit them again. The more we grow in
awareness of the connection of our sins to Christ’s suffering, the more we
become uncompromising in our attitude toward sin. Ultimately, with the help of
the Holy Spirit we do stop committing sin!
Unfortunately, there are people who are so egoistic
that when they commit sin, instead of their sin making them humble, they become
obstinate and disown the fact that they have done anything bad. Because of
their obstinacy, their sinful self gains in strength to the extent that they
become quite insensitive to the sufferings of Christ.
The next stage of their spiritual degradation makes
them disregard the blood of Jesus. Bible calls it treading upon the Son of God
(Jesus Christ) and treating as unholy the blood of Jesus that sanctifies us
from our sins. People who treat Christ in this way are sure to face God’s
judgment both in this life and the life that awaits them after death.
When people face God’s judgment on their sins in this
life, it finds expression through sustained chain of misfortunes such as
described above. The reason behind continuation of the effects of sin from
generation to generation is found in the expression of the same sinful nature
working itself out from generation to generation.
While it is difficult for the members belonging to the
succeeding generations of such a family to find out anything about the sin with
which the curse began to plague the family, there is surely a way to find it
out. It so happens that the sinful nature, which led a person to bring down
curse on his family through his sin, is inherited by his descendants. This
sinful nature finds echo in his descendants…in the generations that follow.
Therefore, it becomes necessary for someone from that
family to be insightfully aware of being victim of such a sinful nature. It
helps that person to conscientiously seek forgiveness for not only the
expression of this sinful nature in him but also in the life of other members
of his family. That person must earnestly and diligently repent and seek
forgiveness for the sinful nature he inherits and passes on to the next
generation. It is absolutely necessary.
Because sin brings curse, it is necessary to remove the
sin in order to have the curse removed. It is absolutely necessary to have the
curse removed through Jesus; because there is no other way in which we can be
free from it. Being cursed is an extremely serious situation. It separates us
from the blessings that God wants to give us.

O God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, O Savior of Israel,
Today I accept you as my God. And as I come into Your
presence, I accept that I am a sinner. Please forgive me my sins and remove my
sinful nature from me. Please remove the curse that this sinful nature has
brought upon me and my family.
O Jesus my Lord, I accept that You have sacrificed
Yourself on the cross for my sins, and have taken away my curse. You died, were
buried in the grave, and rose from death on the third day – all for me and such
as I.
O my Lord, I believe that You are sitting at the right
hand of God the Father as my Advocate. Please plead my cause against Satan and
free me from my sin and curse before God the Father. Redeem me with Your blood
and justify me with Your righteousness.
Please fill me with Your Holy Spirit so that I can
continue in His righteousness till I finish the journey of my life in this
world and enter into Heaven to enjoy all the happiness that You have reserved
for me.
I give all glory and honor to You, o God, to You, o
Jesus, and to You, o Holy Spirit. In Jesus’ mighty and holy name I pray, Amen.
